01 Layout
Tile work stays visible.
Once tile is set and grouted, every line is permanent. Where the layout starts, how the tile lines up with walls and doorways, and where the cut pieces land decide whether a floor looks planned or pieced together.
That is why the layout is worked out before setting starts: the long sightlines in the room, how the pattern meets the entry and where cuts will be least noticeable.
02 Preparation
Large-format tile needs a flat floor.
Large tiles, like the marble-look tile in the photos on this page, show every high and low spot in the surface underneath. If the floor is not flat enough, neighboring tiles sit at slightly different heights. That uneven edge is called lippage, and it is hard to fix once the tile is set.
Preparation comes first, and it often starts with removing the existing floor.

Estimate and scope

Removing the old surface
Existing flooring comes out first when needed. See floor demolition and removal.
Surface preparation
The surface has to be clean, sound and flat enough for the tile being installed.
Layout
Starting lines, alignment with the room and planned placement of cut pieces.
Setting the tile
Tile is set to the layout, keeping lines straight and edges even.
Grout and finish
Joints are grouted and the tile surface is cleaned.
Cleanup
The work area is cleaned up at the end of the job.
