01 Why remove it

When the old floor has to come out.

Installing over the existing floor is not always an option. Manufacturer instructions for new flooring limit what it can go over, and extra layers raise the floor height at doors, cabinets and transitions.

Damaged, loose or uneven flooring also has to come out before a new floor can sit correctly.

02 The subfloor

What removal reveals.

Once the old floor is out, the subfloor is visible, often for the first time in years: leftover adhesive, patches, cracks and uneven areas. The kitchen in the photo on this page shows exactly that stage.

That exposed surface is what the next floor depends on, which is why removal is best planned together with the new installation, whether it is luxury vinyl plank or tile.
